What is SEO? You’ve probably heard it in the office. Maybe it’s been mentioned in marketing meetings or brought up by tech-savvy employees. It sounds pretty slick, but what the heck is it? SEO stands for “Search Engine Optimization,” and it’s the process of getting search engines like Google, Bing, and Yahoo to notice your website and put it in front of online users. While there is paid traffic, SEO deals with unpaid clicks, often referred to as “organic,” “natural,” or “earned” results.

How Search Engines Work:
Each search engine uses a complex computer language, known as an algorithm, that searches the web for keywords, with the goal of delivering relevant websites to users. The search engines literally scan the entire web while looking for the right sites.

Keywords are a major factor in search engines, but it’s not just words in the body of the page. The algorithm will also scan for the words in titles, image descriptions, headers, and more. According to Moz, “Ranking for the right keywords can make or break your website.” Links are also an important factor, as search engines will give more weight to sites that have lots of links from reputable sources.

Search engines are very good at what they do: finding relevant content for users. They are so good at their jobs that over 90% of web traffic uses search engines. Of those using search engines, over 80% are on Google, making it the big dog in SEO efforts.

The way a search engine works, however, is always changing. Google is constantly adjusting, making images more or less important, dropping the relevance of keywords, or changing the algorithm to identify unscrupulous practices like link-purchasing or keyword stuffing.

The key to a search engine’s long-term success is delivering websites that people want. For this reason, creating interesting, engaging, and shareable content is vital to SEO results. Not only should you make it easy for a search engine to find you, you should fill your site with content that people enjoy.

How to Optimize Your Website for SEO:

We could write a giant book on SEO practices, (although there are plenty out there already) but for the sake of this article, we’ll just go over the basics. First of all, you should make sure your website has the keywords you need. While actually filling your site with keywords seems to be getting less and less important, keywords still matter. If you are a plumber, you should obviously have “plumber” and “plumbing” written a few times on your site. Don’t, however, just write plumber repeatedly. Google knows lazy SEO efforts when it sees it.

Another important element to a site is activity. People want websites that are fresh and new, and having an old website that hasn’t changed in years can be a real drawback to SEO results. This is one area where maintaining a blog may help your SEO campaign.

Without doubt, Search Engine Optimization should be an integral part of your Strategic Marketing Plan, if you want to be successful as a business. Sure it takes a little extra effort, but learning and implementing SEO best practices will be worth every minute in the end.
